Over a month ago the Queen Anne’s County Commissioners recognized that their citizens were being ignored by key decision makers on the proposed State Department hard skills facility in Ruthsburg. In an effort to correct this, the commissioners voted unanimously to send letters to Congressman Frank Kratovil, Senator Barbara Mikulski and others, requesting that they take the time to meet with their citizens. The Friends of Ruthsburg citizens group was informed that both Kratovil and Mikulski each replied to that request with a resounding “NO”. Kratovil and Mikulski both have stated repeatedly that it is important to let the process proceed to its conclusion and that they do not wish to interfere with that process. It is painfully obvious that they do not believe the voices of their constituents to be an important part of that process.
This coming Thursday morning, May 13 at 9:00 am, citizens will be having a protest in front of Congressman Frank Kratovil’s office to let him know how they feel about his decision to once again ignore them. In a couple of weeks there is a bus trip planned to Washington D.C. to hold a similar rally at Barbara Mikulski’s office.
Mr. Kratovil has repeatedly stated that his support for this facility was based solely upon a written request by the Queen Anne’s county commissioners to do so. (The record clearly shows that he sent his letters to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the General Services Administration requesting them to bring the hard skills facility to Ruthsburg, a full four days before receiving the Commissioners’ letter.) County citizens cannot comprehend that Mr. Kratovil found it important to listen to the commissioners then but now has chosen to ignore their plea to meet with the citizens.
The citizens planning the protest believe Mr. Kratovil’s and Ms. Mikulski’s behavior is precisely what is wrong with government today and are willing to take time out of their busy schedules to employ peaceful protest to voice their beliefs and concerns.
